Biography:
Andrew McKinney has over 20 years of experience in the development of education technology. His interests revolve around the development and integration of tools that connect digital collections to the teaching and learning process. His current focus is on innovative solutions for the browsing and retrieval of video lecture content with the purpose of allowing instructors and students to discover connections between content and curriculum. He is currently working at the Office of Educational Innovation and Technology (OEIT) at MIT in the Transmedia, Systems and Applications (TSA) group.

Prior to joining OEIT Andrew was the Project Manager and Manager of Software Development for the path-breaking Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) project led by Professor John Belcher at the Center for Educational Computing Initiatives (CECI) at MIT, and has led development for seminal projects such as PIVoT, the Physics Interactive Video Tutor where students can navigate through multimedia content taught by Professor Walter Lewin, and the Shakespeare Electronic Archive (SEA) which is installed at the Folger Library in Washington, D.C. Andrew was the senior software developer for Bringing History Home, an interactive website that engages users in learning history which was built in collaboration with the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities. During this period, Andrew has also served as liaison to faculty in departments including Physics, Mathematics, Literature and Foreign Languages. As well as working with the Stellar Team at Infrastructure Software Development Architecture group of IS&T at MIT developing image management tools for Stellar MIT's course management system.

Before joining MIT, Andrew was an Instructional Computer Specialist/Software Developer with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. He joined FAS to create and manage an electronic classroom/faculty resource center, the success of which led FAS to form the Instructional Computing Group. Andrew has also worked for The DevGroup, Bitstream and DEC.

Andrew graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Northeastern University (1989). He is the Chair of the Maclearning.org steering committee a community that promotes effective pedagogical use of Apple and related third-party technologies with a mission to encourage innovative education through the open exchange of information, solutions, and ideas. He is a member of professional bodies such as Siggraph, and the Association for Computer Machinery. He and his family make their home in Newbury, Massachusetts.

What Andrew brings with him --- even more than his rich and deep experience in leading and developing educational technology projects --- is a passion for helping to improve the effectiveness and productivity of teaching and learning through the usage of technology.
